About this site

Pokémon Team Builder is a free, browser-based planner for assembling a team of six Pokémon and checking how it holds up against all eighteen types. It exists because the most common question in any playthrough or battle format is the same: is this team balanced? Answering it by hand means cross-referencing a type chart for every member, and most people stop after two.

How the analysis works

Every calculation runs in your browser using a type effectiveness matrix for the generation you select. For each attacking type, the builder multiplies the effectiveness against each of a member's types to get a single multiplier, then counts members that take double or quadruple damage, members that resist, and members that are immune. Offensive coverage uses each member's own types as attacking types, because those are the moves that receive the same-type attack bonus.

Abilities, held items, Terastallization, weather and specific movesets are deliberately left out. They vary with each individual set, and including them would make the tables harder to read without making the baseline more accurate. Treat the output as the type-level starting point and adjust for your actual sets.

The teammate suggestions are generated from your current weaknesses. The builder scans the selected game's Pokédex for Pokémon that resist the types currently threatening you, penalises candidates that would introduce a weakness the team does not already have, and lightly prefers fully evolved Pokémon so the list is immediately usable.

Where the data comes from

  • Species, forms, types, generations, per-game Pokédex lists and version exclusives are compiled from the open-source Pokémon Team Planner dataset (MIT licence).
  • Base stats and sprite identifiers come from the open-source Pokémon Showdown data files (MIT licence).
  • Type effectiveness tables are the standard Gen 1, Gen 2–5 and Gen 6+ matrices as published in the games.

If you spot an error in any of this data, write to [email protected] with the Pokémon and game concerned.
