How does this Scarlet and Violet team planner work?

The builder on this page is preloaded with the Scarlet / Violet Pokédex, so every Pokémon you can add is one you can actually catch, evolve or receive in Paldea, Kitakami or Blueberry Academy. Click Add Pokémon in any slot, search by name, Pokédex number or type, and the Defensive matchups, Offensive coverage and Team averages panels update with each pick.

Three details matter for a Paldea run specifically:

  • The Game menu already reads Scarlet / Violet. Leave it there; the suggested teammates list only pulls from this Pokédex, so it will never recommend a Pokémon you cannot get.
  • Every defensive cell shows three numbers in the order weak · resist · immune. For a story team, your job is to make sure none of the eight gym types or four Elite Four types shows a first number higher than 2, and that every type with a first number above 0 has a second or third number above 0.
  • The verdict line above the table names the single worst hole in plain language. If it says a type hits members "and nobody on the team resists it", fix that before anything else.

Once you have six members, use Copy share link to save the URL, Export image to download a summary picture, or Copy names to paste the list somewhere else. Clear team wipes the slots. The tool is a type-level analyzer: it does not model abilities, held items or Terastallization, which is covered further down.

Which types do you need for Paldea's gyms, Elite Four and Champion?

Paldea is open-world, so the game does not force a gym order, but the leaders' levels do not scale. The table below lists the gyms in level order, which is the order most players end up following. The last column is the type of the leader's Tera Pokémon, which is the one that decides whether your matchup actually holds.

OrderLeaderTownTypeAce TeraBring
1KatyCortondoBugTeddiursa, Tera BugFire, Flying, Rock
2BrassiusArtazonGrassSudowoodo, Tera GrassFire, Flying, Bug, Ice, Poison
3IonoLevinciaElectricMismagius, Tera ElectricGround
4KofuCascarrafaWaterCrabominable, Tera WaterGrass, Electric
5LarryMedaliNormalStaraptor, Tera NormalFighting, plus a Ghost to switch in
6RymeMonteneveraGhostToxtricity, Tera GhostGhost, Dark
7TulipAlfornadaPsychicFlorges, Tera PsychicDark, Ghost, Bug
8GrushaGlaseadoIceAltaria, Tera IceFire, Fighting, Rock, Steel

Note how the Tera type changes the puzzle. Sudowoodo is a Rock type, so you would normally hit it with Water, but Tera Grass turns it into a pure Grass type that resists Water. Mismagius is Ghost, so a Dark attack looks right until it Terastallizes into pure Electric. Plan for the Tera type, not the original one.

The Elite Four and Champion at the Pokémon League in Mesagoza follow the same pattern:

OpponentTypeAce TeraBring
RikaGroundClodsire, Tera GroundWater, Grass, Ice
PoppySteelTinkaton, Tera SteelFire, Ground, Fighting
LarryFlyingFlamigo, Tera FlyingElectric, Rock, Ice
HasselDragonBaxcalibur, Tera DragonFairy, Ice, Dragon
Geeta (Top Champion)MixedGlimmora, Tera RockWater, Ground, Steel

Geeta's team is Espathra, Avalugg, Kingambit, Veluza, Gogoat and Glimmora, so a Fighting type and a Water type cover most of it. Across all thirteen bosses, the types that show up most often as answers are Fire, Water, Ground, Fighting, Steel and Dark, which is why a team that has one of each rarely gets stuck.

Team Star and the Titans: the other ten bosses

The Starfall Street path has five bases, each with a single type and a Starmobile (a Revavroom form that shares the squad's type) as the final fight:

SquadBossTypeWeak to
SeginGiacomoDarkFighting, Bug, Fairy
SchedarMelaFireWater, Ground, Rock
NaviAtticusPoisonGround, Psychic
RuchbahOrtegaFairySteel, Poison
CaphEriFightingFlying, Psychic, Fairy

The Path of Legends has five Titans: Klawf (Rock), Bombirdier (Flying/Dark), Orthworm (Steel), the Quaking Earth Titan (Great Tusk, Ground/Fighting, in Scarlet; Iron Treads, Ground/Steel, in Violet) and the False Dragon Titan, which is Dondozo (Water) backed by Tatsugiri (Dragon/Water). Water and Fighting attacks between them deal with four of the five.

If you place a Fighting type, a Water type and a Steel or Poison type on your team, every Team Star boss and every Titan has at least one hard counter. Run the team through the builder and check the Offensive coverage row: Dark, Fire, Poison, Fairy, Fighting, Rock, Flying and Steel should all be lit rather than struck through.

Which Pokémon pair well with each Paldea starter?

Your starter is the one slot that is already decided, so start the builder with it and read the red cells. The three final evolutions have very different holes.

Meowscarada (Grass/Dark) is the fast attacker of the three. It is weak to Fire, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Flying and Fairy and takes ×4 from Bug, which makes Katy's gym harder than it should be. The fix is a Steel type: Tinkaton (Fairy/Steel) resists or ignores Bug, Flying, Ice, Poison and Fairy in one slot. Add a Water type such as Dondozo, Palafin or Veluza for the Fire and the remaining Fighting pressure, and most of Meowscarada's table turns green.

Skeledirge (Fire/Ghost) is the bulkiest starter and the only one with immunities: Normal and Fighting attacks do nothing to it, which makes Larry's gym and Eri's base easy. It is weak to Water, Ground, Rock, Ghost and Dark. A Grass type (Arboliva, Brambleghast or Scovillain) covers the first three, and Kingambit or Tinkaton covers the Ghost and Dark side while adding Steel for Hassel and Tulip.

Quaquaval (Water/Fighting) has the most useful offensive typing for Paldea's bosses, with super-effective attacks into Katy, Larry, Grusha, Rika, Poppy, Mela, Giacomo and the Rock and Steel Titans. Defensively it is weak to Electric, Grass, Flying, Psychic and Fairy. Gholdengo (Steel/Ghost) resists Grass, Flying, Psychic and Fairy and is immune to Fighting, and Clodsire (Poison/Ground) is immune to Electric and resists Fairy and Fighting, so those two plug nearly every gap.

Whichever starter you pick, add it first, then open Suggested teammates. The list is filtered to the Scarlet / Violet Pokédex and ranked so that fully evolved Pokémon with the most useful resistances come first; click one to drop it into the next empty slot.

How does Terastallization change the weakness table?

Terastallization replaces a Pokémon's defensive typing with a single Tera type for the rest of the battle while it keeps the same-type bonus on its original types and gains it on the Tera type. For planning this means two things.

Defensively, a Terastallized member no longer has the weaknesses in its row of the per-member grid; it has the weaknesses of a pure Tera type. A Tera Water Skeledirge stops being weak to Water and Ground and becomes weak to Electric and Grass instead. You can check any single type in the Pokémon type calculator and read it as that member's temporary row. The builder itself does not switch types for you, because you only get one Terastallization per battle and most of the fight happens with your normal types.

Offensively, the Tera type adds a third same-type attack. If one of your members carries a strong coverage move of a type the Offensive coverage row shows as struck through, Tera into that type turns a missed type into a covered one for that fight. Steel and Fairy are common choices for exactly this reason, since Hassel's Dragons and Geeta's Kingambit are otherwise awkward.

A simple rule for story play: build the team so the table is balanced without Tera, then treat Terastallization as a one-time emergency button. Gym leaders use their Tera on the last Pokémon, so you only need to answer one changed typing per fight.

Does the list include the Kitakami and Blueberry DLC?

Yes. The Scarlet / Violet entry in the Game menu holds 905 Pokémon and forms: the Paldea Pokédex, The Teal Mask additions from Kitakami (Dipplin, Poltchageist and Sinistcha, Okidogi, Munkidori, Fezandipiti and Ogerpon) and The Indigo Disk additions from the Blueberry Academy Terarium (Archaludon, Hydrapple, Terapagos and the starters of every earlier generation). Pokémon that were only ever obtainable through Pokémon HOME transfers are listed too, so if you are playing without HOME, treat anything that does not appear in your in-game Pokédex as unavailable.

Two groups are worth checking before you commit a slot:

  • Version exclusives. Scarlet has Armarouge, the Larvitar line, Stonjourner, Drifloon, the Deino line, Skrelp, Oranguru, the ancient Paradox Pokémon such as Great Tusk and Roaring Moon, and Koraidon. Violet has Ceruledge, the Bagon line, Eiscue, Misdreavus, the Dreepy line, Clauncher, Passimian, Gulpin, the future Paradox Pokémon such as Iron Treads and Iron Valiant, and Miraidon.
  • DLC-only Pokémon. If you plan to fight the Blueberry Elite Four (Crispin, Fire; Amarys, Steel; Lacey, Fairy; Drayton, Dragon) and Kieran, the same approach applies: one Water or Ground type for Crispin, a Fire or Ground type for Amarys, a Steel or Poison type for Lacey, and a Fairy or Ice type for Drayton. The builder treats these the same as any other boss types.

Frequently asked questions

Does this Scarlet and Violet team builder include the DLC Pokémon?

Yes. The Scarlet / Violet list contains the Paldea Pokédex plus everything added in The Teal Mask (Kitakami) and The Indigo Disk (Blueberry Academy), including Ogerpon, Dipplin, Hydrapple, Archaludon and Terapagos, and the returning starters from earlier generations. If you have not bought the DLC, simply skip those entries when you search.

What is the best team for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

There is no single best team, but a strong story team covers the eight gym types and the Elite Four with a Steel type, a Water type, a Ground or Rock type, a Fire type and a Fairy or Dragon answer. Tinkaton, Kingambit, Gholdengo, Baxcalibur, Clodsire, Pawmot and Annihilape are popular because each one resists several of those boss types at once. Use the builder to check that no boss type hits more than two members.

Does the builder account for Terastallization?

No. The tables use each Pokémon's normal types. A Terastallized Pokémon takes damage as a pure version of its Tera type while keeping its original attacking bonuses, so if you plan to Tera a member, check that single Tera type in the type calculator and treat the result as that member's defensive row for the turns it is Terastallized.

Which starter is the best for a Paldea playthrough?

All three work. Meowscarada (Grass/Dark) beats Kofu, Tulip and Ryme but has seven weaknesses including a quadruple weakness to Bug. Skeledirge (Fire/Ghost) is the bulkiest and is immune to Larry's Normal moves. Quaquaval (Water/Fighting) handles Katy, Grusha, Larry and Poppy. The builder shows how each choice changes what your other five members need to cover.

Can I use this for a Violet team as well as a Scarlet team?

Yes. Both versions share one Pokédex entry in the Game menu because the regions, gyms and type rules are identical. The only difference is the version exclusives, such as Armarouge and the ancient Paradox Pokémon in Scarlet versus Ceruledge and the future Paradox Pokémon in Violet, so check that your picks exist in your version.

Can I share my Scarlet and Violet team with friends?

Yes. Press Copy share link to copy a URL that encodes your six Pokémon and the selected game. Export image downloads a 1200 by 630 picture with the team and its weaknesses for Discord or Reddit, and Copy names puts the six names on your clipboard. Your team is also kept in your browser so it is still there next time.

Does the builder know about abilities or held items?

No. Weaknesses and resistances are calculated from types only. Abilities such as Levitate, Flash Fire, Thick Fat or Water Absorb, and items such as Air Balloon, change individual matchups, so adjust the table for any member whose ability removes a weakness.
